FAQs

Are Mr. D’s Donuts Gluten Free?

Unfortunately at this time, we are not gluten-free nor gluten-sensitive. All donuts, including mochi donuts, contain flour due to equipment sharing, having a one-location production, and flouring our countertops.

What are mochi donuts?

Mochi donuts are chewy and bouncy rings of deliciousness! Made with rice flour, they have a description known in Chinese as “QQ”. This QQ factor in food is loosely translated to being authenticly Asian, bouncy, perfectly chewy, and delicious.

Born in Taiwan , Johnny (Co-owner of Mr. D’s) brought this concept to KC from his hometown. Mochi is a stuffed rice flour dessert from Taiwan and has become a staple food throughout Asia. You will usually find rice flour and rice flour products in many Taiwanese households, and Mochi is even a common dessert for holidays. Johnny is a sucker for black sesame stuffed mochi soup (also known as Tangyuan)! It’s such a regular consumer product, that Mr. D’s rice flour is MADE in Taiwan, shipped to Hawaii, and then delivered to us in KC. So you get a little bit of Taiwanese authenticity in every bite!

Our fun shape and colors are inspired by Mister Donut, a famous donut chain in Taiwan known for its adorable designs. And our popular combo, Ube Mochi, is inspired by Taiwanese purple yams! Even though purple yams are quite sweet, they’re served as the starch of a meal for many Asian households and are eaten regularly as a snack in Taiwan.
